Pay-Per-View Reviews
Before I start, I just want to give my respect to Larry Sweeny. I thought that he was great on the mike and good in the ring. And having a mental disability myself, I could sympathise with what he went through. Truly the wrestling world lost a great talent. Rest in Peace Larry Sweeny.
Well, Wrestlemania weekend is over. Over the weekend, we had four pay-per-views during the weekend; two from Ring of Honor, one from Dragon Gate USA, and of coarse, Wrestlemania. So I decided to do a review for all four shows, as wells as some ranting on what I liked and didn't like.
I'll start with the first one I saw, Honor Takes Center Stage: Day 1.
El Generico vs. Michael Elgin
It was a pretty decent match, thought I felt they didn't do a good job pushing Michael Elgin. He was hardly offensive, which isn't too good if they're trying to push Elgin as a muscle. It was a solid match with Elgin getting the victory when a masked man attacked El Generico, leaving me wondering who it could be. Final verdict - 6/10.
Four Corner Survival: Caleb Konley vs. Colt Cabana vs. Homicide vs. Tommaso Ciampa
This match was better than I expected, even Homicide, who has been disappointing since his return to the Indies, put on a decent show. His three tope con hilos were well done. Homicide got the victory when he hit Konley with a Cop Killa. Final verdict - 6/10.
After the match, Truth said that Caleb Konley was not in the house of truth and had Michael Elgin destroy Konley.
Sara Del Ray & Sereena Deeb vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto & Ayumi Kurihara
A solid women's match. This one really shows what the women of honor can do, and they were given some time to shine. Ending with Matsumoto and Kurihara getting the win, it shows that women's wrestling isn't dead. Final verdict - 7/10.
Jay and Mark Briscoe vs. Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly
A good tag team match. The Briscoes are doing well as a heel tag team. And I think it's a good time to do so since I have noticed cases where the fans are getting a little tired of them. Cole and O'Reilly are coming along as a tag team and I would like to see them as tag team champions in a year or two. The Briscoes get the victory in the end, and then the All Night Express hit the ring, continuing the Briscoes/ANX feud. Final verdict - 7/10.
Davey Richards vs. Roderick Strong
My pick for match of the night. While not as good as their match at Final Battle, this one was still solid. Great action all around with Davey getting a submission victory. This proves that Davey is the future of the company and they need to get the belt on him soon. It also shows that Roderick can be good even though he's not world champion material. Final verdict - 9/10
Kings of Wrestling vs. Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin - ROH World Tag Team Title Match
This is where the pay-per-view started to go downhill. I'm a big fan of the Kings of Wrestling, but Haas and Benjamin dragged the match down. Basically, it was an average match that ended with Claudio tapping out to the Haas of Pain. Just because they wrestled in the WWE doesn't mean that they deserve to be in the main events. There are much better teams in ROH that deserve these titles before them; the All Night Express, Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly, hell even the Bravado Brothers deserve the belts more than those two do. The only reason they're being pushed because the company and the ROHbots think that ROH is sticking it to the WWE. Newsflash people, the WWE doesn't give a shit about those them. If they did, then why did they fire them? Seriously, this is the kind of booking I'd expect from TNA. Final verdict - 6/10
Eddie Edwards vs. Christopher Daniels - ROH World Title Match
So it's Eddie Edwards' first attempt at the main event scene, and how did he do? Terribly. This match felt like a midcard match; with Edwards no-selling enough finishers to make John Cena proud. Seriously, Eddie Edwards is nothing more than a midcarder pretending to be a champion. Anyone who thinks that Edwards is a good champion should be put in a mental asylum and shown all of the ROH wrestlers who are more talented than he is. Seriously ROHbots, stop worshipping everything that ROH does. But besides that, it ended with Daniels walking out when Edwards offered a handshake; implying that Daniels could be turning heel soon. Final verdict - 6/10, go watch the Ninth Anniversary Show if you want to see a good match between Christopher Daniels and Eddie Edwards.
Overall, it was a good show, a decent way to start off Wrestlemania weekend. Show rating - 8/10
Next up is ROH's second show, Honor Takes Center Stage Night Two.
Kings of Wrestling vs. Adam Cole & Kyle O'Reilly A decent match between the two, with some implications that there's some problems between the Kings and Shane Hagadorn. In the end, the Kings reign supreme against the youngsters. Final verdict - 6/10
Colt Cabana vs. Dave Taylor
Well, ROH manages to bring in a wrestler over the age of fifty. But at least he's still somewhat decent. Basically, Cabana beats him in an average match. Final verdict - 5/10
Homicide vs. Tommaso Ciampa
Well, Homicide returns to his mediocre ways in this match. Basically, it was just some random match to show off the new member of the Embassy; with Ciampa getting the victory. Final verdict - 5/10
Christopher Daniels vs. Michael Elgin - Non title
I have to say that this match did a better job at showing off Elgin. I think if they give him some time; he might fit in with the ROH roster. It ended with Christopher Daniels using a low blow to get the victory. Giving some more evidence that a heel turn is coming. Final verdict - 6/10.
Next up, Jim Cornette comes out to interview Davey Richards. Basically, it starts off with ROH trying to make us like Eddie by having Davey shill him, but it fails like all the other times a star tries to shill some guy we don't want to see. Then it basically ends with a hint that the Wolves could turn on each other.
Daizee Haze & Tomoka Nakagawa vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto & Ayumi Kurihara - SHIMMER Tag Team Title Match
Another decent women's match. But man, Daizee's looking really thin. I have to agree with the crowd, she needs to eat a burger. But she still knows how to put on a good show. In the end, Daizee and Tomaka retain the belts. Final verdict - 6/10
The Briscoes vs. The All Night Express
A good tag team match. The All Night Express have really been improving themselves and would make good tag team champions. It ends with the Briscoes getting the victory, but I'm guessing the feud is far from over. Final verdict - 7/10
El Generico vs. Roderick Strong
A solid match between the two of them. It seems that Generico's next feud will be against the House of Truth. Basically, despite all of the interference, Generico was able to get the victory. Elgin and Truth hit the ring, but then Colt Cabana came down to help his friend. Then Christopher Daniels entered the ring to hit El Generico with the Book of Truth. The House of Truth gets a new member and who knows were this feud will go. Final verdict - 7/10
American Wolves vs. Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin - non title match.
I'm going to say it, this was the best match of the night, mainly because Davey and Eddie were able to carry it. This is where Eddie shines, in tag matches and some midcard matches; he is not a main eventer. Basically, it ends with Haas and Benjamin picking up the victory as well as the Wolves arguing with each other, continuing on the American Wolves feud. Final verdict - 8/10
Overall, clearly a downgrade from the show last night. If you can only order one of the shows, go with night one, it had better matches. Also, I find it amazing that ROH wants to compete against the WWE, yet they pretty much focused on ex WWE stars. Show rating - 7/10
The third show was Dragon Gate USA: Mercury Rising 2011.
Jon Moxley vs. Arik Cannon
Sadly, I was only able to see half of this match due to some technical difficulties from the website. So sadly, I can't give the match a proper rating. Basically, it ends with Moxley using the playboy models to get the victory. Reby Sky tries to tell the referee about it, but fails. Plus Cannon seems very pissed about how the match went. Rating - NA
Elimination Match: AR Fox vs. Brodie Lee vs. Jimmy Jacobs vs. Jon Davis vs. Silas Young vs. Stalker Ichickawa
All I can say is that I'm amazed that they brought a guy over from Japan, only to basically do nothing with him. Now I don't hate comedy wrestling, hell I'm a fan of CHIKARA, but they do have to wrestle. All Stalker Ichickawa did was comedy spots. As for the others, they did a good job in the match. AR Fox shown some potential, Jon Davis showed that he can do singles matches, and Silas Young was pretty good. Jimmy Jacobs continued his quest for the Open the Freedom Gate title with a good showing, but in the end, it was Brodie Lee who won the match. As for Brodie, I was amazed that he was able to do a somewhat descent head scissors and a good outside dive; something you don't see from people his size. Overall, a decent match. Final verdict - 7/10
Masato Yoshino vs. Sami Callihan
An interesting match; of coarse, Yoshino is an excellent performer and one of the greatest stars in Dragon Gate. The two gave it their wall with Yoshino getting the victory. After the match, Sami Callihan seemed very pissed at the result. Final verdict - 7/10
After the match, a jobber match gets interrupted by Sami Callihan, who's still mad. Arik Cannon comes down and the two start brawling.
PAC vs. Akira Tozawa - Open the Brave Gate Title Match
Akira Tozawa proved why he is one of the fastest rising stars in the match. Both he and PAC gave a good performance. And judging by the fan reaction, I'm sure we'll see more of him in the future. Final verdict - 8/10
YAMATO vs. Austin Aries - Open the Freedom Gate Title Match
The match starts off with YAMATO telling Jon Moxley to go to the back and saying that he wants to be a fighting champion. Looks like we could see a face turn for him in the future. Anyway, this was a great match and YAMATO proved why he deserves a main event title, unlike Eddie Edwards. The match ends with YAMATO getting the victory and keeping the title, leaving Aries' future in question. And I know that Aries joins Blood Warriors so you don't have to tell me. Final Verdict - 8/10
CIMA, Naruki Doi, and Ricochet of Blood Warriors vs. Chuck Taylor, Johnny Gargano, and Rich Swann of Ronin.
It's main event time as Dragon's Gate proves why they are the masters of six-men tag matches. I have to say that Rich Swann has improved a lot since I saw him at Bushido. I guess his time in Japan has really improved him. Basically, all six of them put on a great performance to show what Dragon's Gate USA is all about, giving in my opinion, the match of the night. In the end, Blood Warriors get the victory and continue their domination in both Japan and the US. Final verdict - 8.5/10
Out of all four shows that aired on Wrestlemania weekend; Dragon's Gate gave me the best one. Mercury Rising is a huge improvement over Bushido and I strongly recommend everyone to watch it. Show rating - 8.5/10.
Now for the final show, Wrestlemania 27. So how did the WWE do, not very well. I'm not going to review the segments because I wasn't really paying attention to them; but most of them were awful. The only part that was entertaining was when Zack Ryder sang Friday, only because he's so good at being a tool. But this was the first thing that came to mind as I saw the Rock's promo: ROH started with a match, Dragon's Gate USA started out with a match, WWE stars out with a promo. Kind of shows where their priorities lie, doesn't it. As for cutting the Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus match, all I can say is that it probably would've improved the show.
Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio - World Heavyweight title match.
An average match between the two, plus it seemed odd to do the World Heavyweight title match now. Christian and Brodus Clay did do a bit at ringside. Edge gets the victory in this decent opening match. Final verdict - 6/10.
Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes
Personally, I liked the dashing gimmick as it allowed Cody to show more charisma. Right now, I don't know what to think about his new emo gimmick. Cody gets the victory by hitting Mysterio with his own knee brace. Overall, it was an average match. Final verdict - 5/10
Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella, and Kofi Kingston vs. the Corre
What can I say, it was a squash match. Why would you use eight people if you're only going to do a squash match? Anyways; the face team gets the victory. Final verdict - 2/10.
Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
Not too much happened to the match. The two of them can be interesting, but this wasn't one of their better matches. Orton gets the victory by hitting the RKO out of nowhere. Final verdict - 6/10.
Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole
Now I wasn't expecting much, but this matched was just bad. It started out interesting with Lawler dragging Cole out of the Cole mine; but then Jack Swagger beat Lawler up. That's when everything went downhill as Cole was completely offensive by performing some of the weakest looking wrestling moves that I've seen. Seriously WWE, why are you trying to make Michael Cole look like a wrestler? Basically, the next ten minutes were Lawler overselling Cole's pathetic move. Then Lawler turns the tables, Austin stuns Swagger, and Lawler makes Cole submit. Then the anonymous general manager reverses the decision; but this match was so bad that I didn't care. Final verdict - 1/10.
Triple H vs. the Undertaker
This clearly was the match of the night. It started out strong with Triple H and the Undertaker using any weapon they can find and throwing each other into various objects. But in the end, it really slowed down with them hitting their finishers over and over again. But it's the Undertaker who gets the victory with the Hell's Gate submission and sadly, the streak continues. Final verdict - 7.5/10.
John Morrison, Trish Stratus, and Snooki vs. Dolph Ziggler and Laycool
Another squash match, seriously, why are there two squash matches in a Wrestlemania. Basically, Trish dominates, Morrison and Ziggler don't really do anything, and Snooki was just bad in the ring. The match ends with Snooki getting the victory for her team and thankfully, we don't have to see her again. Final verdict - 2/10.
John Cena vs. The Miz - WWE title match.
The Miz comes out with a decent intro. I don't know what to think of Cena's though; I honestly thought that they were trying to start the first church of John Cena (that does sound like something Vince would do.) But I have to say that at some points, like Cena's trip across the ring, Cena really seemed out of it. Personally, I did enjoy seeing the Miz kick out of the Attitude Adjustment. It did save the match from getting your typical Cena ending of him no-selling numerous things with the opponent goes down for the count with one Attitude Adjustment. Basically the match goes to a double count-out; so the Rock comes down and restarts the match, only to screw Cena and help the Miz win. I guess the Rock was just there to make his little contribution to the show. Final verdict - 6.5/10.
I'm going to say this, out of the four shows, Wrestlemania was the worst. It's pretty bad when the top company brings in their biggest event, yet gets overshadowed by the smaller ones. Show rating - 6.5/10
That's my review of the four shows. I say that it was a good weekend for wrestling and I did see a good match of the year contender with Davey Richards vs. Roderick Strong. Sadly Cole vs. Lawler is now my choice for worst match of the year and to make matters worse, the feud is continuing.
My reviews of the Wrestling Pay-Per-Vies that aired during Wrestlemania weekend.
