Disney Jr is putting out quite a few good shows and one of them is Miles from Tomorrowland. This one focuses on a futuristic space scene which is very creative and well done. Adding to it are well written characters who manage to be both fun and likeable. While the show may not be as good as Sofia the First, it still manages to have its own charm to it. Like with my Star vs. the Forces of Evil list, the ranking will focus on the segment from the episode and not the entire episode itself.
20: The Taking of the Solar Express
Haruna’s family invite the Callistos along for the test run of their new space train - the Solar Express; but it gets taken over by an unexpected passenger – Gadfly Garnett. Gadfly episodes usually involve Miles using his wits to defeat the villain and this one follows the suit. But we also see some good plans from Miles’s friend Haruna as well.
19: Surfin’ The Whirlpool
Miles, Leo, and M.E.R.C. head to the Zuma Whirlpool for a father-son-robo-ostrich surfing trip; but they end up getting stuck in a gamma ray storm. While this one was the second half of the first episode, I find it does a better job of introducing the supporting cast. We still see a lot of Miles and his fun-loving attitude and M.E.R.C.’s silliness, but it also introduces us to the rest of the Callistos, mainly Leo. It also gives us a good feel of the space environment and the way the Callistos work together to solve problems.
18: Planet of the Plants
The Callistos travel to Antheia, a planet where the plants are orange, but Miles and Loretta are having problems listening to each other. This episode focuses on the relationship between Miles and Loretta, showing that even if they don’t always get along, they always find a way to patch things up. And while Miles does come across as insensitive at times, he still manages to be likeable. The plants in the episode help show off the creativity of the show’s future setting.
17: The Neptune Adventure
Miles, Loretta, M.E.R.C. and the Cosmic Explorers go to the Trident Research Station on Neptune. But a storm damages the station and traps the kids inside, so they have to get to the docking bay so their families can get them. Miles from Tomorrowland is often compared to Sofia the First and this episode is sort of like “The Buttercups.” Like the Buttercups did with Sofia; this episode shows Miles’s leadership skills as he helps his friends get through the damaged Trident station. But we also see skills from Loretta and Miles’s friends Blodger and Pipp. The episode is also the first appearance of Professor Rubicon.
16: The Discovery Expedition
Loretta invents a new program that can detect computer codes which discovers a hidden planet. While Miles is the star of the show, Loretta does get a lot of focus. Here we see her use her knowledge of computer coding to discover a planet and solve various problems. The episode has a lot of references to the Tempest and a good moral about trusting in yourself and what you believe in.
15: Team Exo-Flex
Miles, Haruna, Pip, and Blodger volunteer for a mission to do some Exo-Flex training only to find themselves in an underground volcano. One of Miles’s strongest skills is his quick thinking, which shows up a lot in this episode. We also see more of his leadership skills and Miles’s friends receive some more development too. The action in the episode is intense and the animation for the magma was done well.
14: Yuri’s Night
It’s time for the Yuri’s Night celebration and the Callistos have to bring rock musician Bootjet Groovestar to the big show at the end of Yuri’s Night. One of the show’s strongpoints is the research they do for the space theme. It shows with the mention of Yuri Gagarin; which is a pretty good genius bonus for a show aimed at preschoolers. Bootjet Groovestar was good character and the episode gives a nice moral about never giving up.
13: Attack of the Flickorax
Miles, Loretta, and M.E.R.C. discover some Flickorax, metal eating aliens who are attracted to light, on the planet Calpurnia. Now they have to get them off the planet before they eat the spacestation. Miles and Loretta are one of the best cartoon sibling teams and their relationship is one of my favourite parts of the show. This episode shows how well they, along with M.E.R.C., use their strengths to solve the Flickorax problem.
12: The Hoverbike Diaries
Leo and Uncle Joe invite Miles to go on their hoverbike roadtrip and become a member of the Callisto crew. I find this one shows how Miles is one of the better cartoon kid characters. The main theme how much he looks up to his Dad and Uncle and wants to be like them. You can also identify with Miles because the mistakes he makes are honest ones and he does find a way to solve the problem too.
11: Miles vs. the Volcano
Olympus Mons, Mars’s largest volcano, is about to erupt, and while Loretta and Leo help evacuate a colony of artists; Miles and Phoebe search for Phoebe’s sister Frida. The adventure on Mars was well done with some good action. The episode introduces us to Frida (voiced by Brenda Song) and her robo porcupine Pollock, both of whom are fun and likeable. It was also interesting to see Phoebe and Miles working together.
10: Ride of the Quarkons
The Callistos discover that aliens called Quarkons are blocking the Photon Super Highway and the key to getting them to move may be Miles and Loretta’s moon rock band. What really sells the episode is the animation, especially that of the Quarkons. And seeing Miles and Loretta starting a moon rock bank was pretty good too; and while the “practice makes perfect” morale is a little generic, they still manage to tell an interesting story which makes up for it.
9: Eye to Eye
The Callistos crash-land on a planet and go looking for parts of their Star Jetter. There they meet Spectryx (voiced by George Takai,) who claims that they crashed into his ship. The show can get very creative with their aliens – and in this case they use one who can only see in the infrared spectrum. Spectryx himself starts out a little unfriendly, but like Miles, you really get to know him when you find out more about him. Overall, this is a well thought-out episode that shows how you can get to know somebody better when you start seeing things their way as well.
8: The Quantum Cup
The Quantum Kick finals are here and both the Moonquakes (which have Miles, Loretta, and their friends) are against Queen Gemma’s Gamma Rays. Both teams have their own plans to win the Quantum Cup; but the Gamma Rays get into trouble when Queen Gemma takes them to train in an asteroid field. This is a good sports episode, but what really helps is that the episode focuses on the importance of friendship without making competition look bad. Both teams manage to remain likable since they all remain friends all throughout the episode.
7: Unplugged
The Callistos are forced to get through an uninhabited planet after a solar flare crashes the Starjetter and knocks out all of their tech. It takes a lot of work to show that you don’t always need technology without making technology itself look bad and this episode does it. We also get a good adventure when we see the Calilstos getting to the TTA station while relying on their wits and each other.
6: Happy Captain’s Day
Leo, Miles, Loretta, and M.E.R.C. plan to give Phoebe the best Captain’s Day when they take her to see and study the Liang comet. This episode does a good job developing the Callisto family showing that they’re very close not just as a crew, but as a family. We even see some of the types of aliens that the show has when Miles befriends some rock creatures.
5: The Search for Skellig Ro
Loretta fails her Naxos exam, so Miles and M.E.R.C. accompany her to find Naxos master Skellig Ro so she can receive training from him. The episode shows off more of Loretta as she learns how to deal with her first failure. And we also see some more of her strengths as she uses her Naxos skills and her smarts to get through Skellig Ro’s challenges. Miles is also a good supporting character as it shows how much he’s willing to help his sister.
4: Journey to the Frozen Planet
Loretta gets trapped on an ice flow in a frozen river and it’s up to the Callisto family to save her. Here we get a good view of the kids’ way of thinking as Loretta likes to follow instructions while Miles prefers to find his own way of doing things. While the two of them both think their way is better at first; what makes the episode really strong is that it doesn’t portray neither side as wrong. They do a good job showing how some situations require following instructions while others involve creative thinking; avoiding the “one side has to be right” cliché that many kids shows tend to have.
3: Mighty M.E.R.C.
M.E.R.C.’s job is at stake when the TTA gives the Callistos a new robot named Axel to take over his position. While the description sounds like your standard replacement storyline, it averts it in many ways. The first is how they make sure that your sympathy lies with M.E.R.C. as he clearly wants to keep his job. We also see how devoted Miles is to M.E.R.C. since he doesn’t want to lose his best friend. Another strong point is that while the Callistos are impressed with Axel, they still want to keep M.E.R.C. All those things, along with showing M.E.R.C.’s strong points is what makes this a great episode.
2: The Hitchhiker’s Ride Through the Galaxy
Loretta’s giving a presentation about the Builders at Professor Rubicon’s science conference show on Alarbus, but the Stellosphere breaks down; so Miles, Loretta, and M.E.R.C. turn to their friends to get her to her presentation. This one is sort of a callback to previous episodes as the trio receive help from the Tethoscape’s cook Lysander, Bootjet Groovestar, and Queen Gemma for help. They also do more than just give rides as they also help Loretta with a puzzle that she wanted to solve for her big presentation. The episode’s main theme is the importance of family and friends and the ending even gives a preview for the next season.
1: Dino World
The Callistos go to the Trident Research Station for Professor Rubicon’s new dinosaur exhibit; only to find that he’s been missing on the planet Demaclies. So they go out to find him and soon discover that dinosaurs are still alive on Demaclies. Dinosaurs are a good element for storytelling and the episode does a good job using them. We see that Loretta likes dinosaurs and her favourite is the Ankylosaursus. But the strongest part of the episode is when it focuses on the relationship between Miles and Loretta.
