Top 10 Star vs. The Forces of Evil Episodes
Star vs. the Forces of Evil has to be the best new Disney show of 2015. So to honour this great series I plan to count down the ten best episodes of the season. But before I start, I plan to give a few guidelines. Now the average episode tends to contain two fifteen minute segments – so the rankings will involve the segments and not the full episode itself. But the thirty minute episodes will count as one entry. There were many episodes to choose from, but I was able to select ten ones that I enjoyed. Now let’s kick off the list.
10) Party with a Pony
This was one of the show’s first episodes and it introduces us to Flying Princess Ponyhead, Star’s best friend on Mewni. Here they use the plot of where the old friend is jealous of the new friend and the old friend tries to hurt the new friend behind the central character’s back. Yet they manage to keep Star very likable as she wants to believe Marco, but doesn’t want to doubt Ponyhead either. And while Ponyhead was a bit of a jerk; she does manage to redeem herself in the end.
9) Freeze Day
One talent Star vs. the Forces of Evil has is how even with all the silliness it has; it can still do dramatic moments without coming across as forces. It starts with Star accidentally freezing time only to find that she can’t unfreeze it. So she and Marco go to the time dimension to get Father Time to start up time again. I don’t want to spoil anything, but they manage to give some good sad moments at the end even after a whole episode that was nothing but silliness. It really shows just how talented these writers are.
8) Mewberty
Star goes through a mewman’s version of puberty that causes her to go crazy and turn into a monster whenever she’s around boys, so Marco tries to find a way to cure her. This one manages to be funny, creepy, and dramatic at the same time. And while we do see quite a bit of Marco, this episode also introduces us to Janna.
7) Blood Moon Ball
Star’s ex-boyfriend Tom returns to invite her to the Blood Moon Ball. Marco doesn’t trust him, but Star thinks that he’s changed and decides to go with him. The most famous part of the episode has to be the dance scene, which is well done. It also gives some great development for Star as it shows her as more than just a silly girl. It also has a good moral about trusting others and giving them their space. The only weakness in the episode would have to be Marco.
6) Cheer Up Star
The episode starts with Star cheering up Marco after he has his worst day ever. Then Star meets her new crush Oskar and gives him her number. But he never calls, which depresses her. So Marco tries to cheer Star up, only for things to go over their heads. This is one of the earlier episodes and it really helps develop the friendship between Marco and Star.
5) Lobster Claws
Ludo fires the monster Lobster Claws, so he decides to try and be good. Star doesn’t trust him, but Marco is willing to give him a chance. This episode uses a lot of black comedy with Lobster Claws failing at his attempts to be good, and it still manages to be funny. Star also remains likable when she tries to give Lobster Claws his job back. And Marco still manages to be likable without being too naïve.
4) Star Comes to Earth
The show’s first episode manages to be a memorable one. It introduces us to Star, Marco, Ludo, and the monsters. The plot may seem like a basic “new person comes and annoys another person,” but it manages to avert it with Star. She realizes that she has upset Marco and is willing to face consequences for her actions – rather than have Marco just randomly accept that she’s quirky. It helps show that both Star and Marco are likable; the most important thing you can do for your protagonists.
3) Mewnipendance Day
Star calls her friends over to recreate the Mewni holiday “Mewnipendance Day,” but she begins to have second thoughts about the holiday when she finds that it’s not what she thought it was. Meanwhile Buff Frog starts to have doubts about Toffee. The strongest point of the episode was Star and how it shows her kinder side. It also gives more insight about Toffee as we see that he’s not a joke character like the other monsters.
2) Storm the Castle
In the season finale, Marco is kidnapped by Toffee, so Star goes to Ludo’s castle to save him. Along the way, she makes an alliance with Buff Frog and Ludo; both of whom were kicked out in previous episodes. This one is the most dramatic as Star is really pushed to the limits and has to make a huge sacrifice. We also see Toffee’s final plan come together, which makes him an excellent villain.
1) St. Olga’s School for Wayward Princesses
In the show’s first thirty-minute episode, Star and Marco sneak into St. Olga’s in order to break out Ponyhead; only to find out that the place is robbing princesses of their individuality. Here we get to see the St. Olga’s school that was mentioned a few times, and find that it’s even creepier than imagined. Star and Marco are both entertaining during their jailbreak plan. Miss Heinous is a great villain and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of her in the next season. Overall, this was a great episode that’s definitely worth a watch.
Final Thoughts
I have to say that the first season was a good start for Star vs. the Forces of Evil. We get a lot of development for our leads and the show even ends up having a good arc that leads to a dramatic ending, and even some plot points that could continue in season two. My personal desire for season two would be to have an episode that features more of the background characters: mainly Jackie and Jana.
Honourable Mentions:
Brittney’s Party
Diaz Family Vacation
Fortune Cookies
Sleep Spells
My personal picks for the best episodes from the first season of Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
